Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are looking a lot more fragile at the back these days.
The Gers were beaten 4-3 by Spartak Moscow in the Europa League on Thursday, which has made things extremely tight in Group E.
Rangers lie third on five points, with Spartak one place ahead on the same number.
Villarreal lead the group on six points, with fourth-placed Rapid Vienna bottom on four points.
Gerrard will hope to see a major improvement defensively going into the final two games, but perhaps a big call he made has contributed to the regression at the back.
Katic and Goldson parternship looked rusty
Against Spartak, Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson looked like strangers to one another.
Katic in particular appeared to be lacking in confidence; as though his recent omissions from the starting XI have got to him.
Gerrard has opted to pair Goldson with Joe Worrall together in recent weeks, which appears to have disrupted the momentum and understanding Goldson and Katic had together at the start of the season.
The Croatian has had his injury problems recently which obviously forced Gerrard to change things up, but the Liverpool legend has used him sparingly since his return, refusing to revert back to his original pairing.
Gerrard needs to stick with one pairing rather than chopping and changing.
And the pairing he should go with is Katic and Goldson, who looked great together early on and Worrall may not be sticking around beyond the current season since he’s only on loan from Nottingham Forest.
