German media deliver mixed reviews of Arsenal’s Kai Havertz’s performance in 2-2 draw with the Netherlands
Like it has for many Arsenal players over the break, it’s been a busy week or so for Kai Havertz who played 180 minutes in Germany’s Nations League games.
Although Julian Nagelsmann often used the Arsenal man as an out and out number nine at the Euros, Havertz was deployed as a #10 in both games during this break.
Even without West Ham United’s Niclas Fullkrug, who succumbed to an injury after the first game, the Germany manager opted not to deploy Havertz as the nine.
Havertz impressed against Hungary, and Nagelsmann instead chose to start former Brighton & Hove Albion striker Denis Undav just ahead, who scored Germany’s first goal.
Of course, this deeper position could bode well ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming North London derby, when Havertz may be required to play slightly deeper given those who are missing.
Arsenal striker Kai Havertz told that his finishing is his big ‘weakness’
shared their review of Havertz’s display in the hole just behind the striker, lamenting his weak finishing.
They wrote: “The Arsenal professional is once again allowed to play centrally in the attacking midfield, but he dives too often.

“His weakness in finishing is also once again evident when he pushes the ball over the goal from a short distance while standing free. But he is at least involved in the equaliser.”
simply wrote: “Does a lot of defensive work, but remains unlucky for long stretches.”
felt as if the Arsenal striker was foiled by the Dutch defence, who sat in a block which stifled a key part of Havertz’s game.
They shared: “Lacked a fixed point without Füllkrug. Could not use his speed against the deep defence.”
were then positive about Havertz’s work-rate and attacking movement, but highlighted his issue taking chances once again.
“Moved skilfully through the attacking corridors. Managed to overload spaces again and again.
“One of his strong pressing moments led to the 1:1. But once again there was much more potential in his own finishes.”
Kai Havertz likely to replace injured Martin Odegaard in North London derby
As mentioned, it seems very likely that Havertz will drop back into the number eight or 10 role against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Martin Odegaard has picked up an injury, and it currently seems unlikely that he’ll play any part.
Arsenal might turn to Ethan Nwaneri to start, although Mikel Arteta has been reluctant to rush his youngsters in the past.
It’s a considerable conundrum for the Arsenal manager, but whatever team he chooses, Havertz will be a vital cog.
That being said, it seems as if Gabriel Jesus may even captain Arsenal if he’s fit for the derby.
