Georginio Wijnaldum comments on Liverpool future, says he could join three clubs
that he is open to finishing his career in his home country with one of his three former sides, in PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord or Sparta Rotterdam.
Wijnaldum, 29, scored on Monday night as Liverpool came from behind to beat West Ham United at Anfield – and stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League table to a whopping 22 points.
It was his 17th goal in 174 appearances since joining Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the summer of 2016, for a fee of £25million (). Already closing in on 200 outings for the Reds, Wijnaldum is averaging around 50 games a season.
Coming through Sparta’s academy, Wijnaldum joined Feyenoord as a 14-year-old before managing 135 senior appearances. He moved to PSV in 2011 for four years, clocking up another 154 games before joining Newcastle in 2015.
Wijnaldum’s current contract expires in the summer of 2021, and it remains to be seen if he will be offered a new deal. But the midfielder has stated that he wants to finish his career in the Netherlands, and is open to doing that at one of his former sides.
“I see myself returning to Feyenoord, PSV or Sparta,” “I look at Sparta and I think ‘well, it would be nice if I played there in my last years’. In the Netherlands I have played at three clubs and I have had a very good feeling about all three.
“You want to play at the highest level and win prizes, like Clarence Seedorf. My dream is to stay fit for as long as I can, like Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] or Ronaldo. I want to play at a high level until I am 38. “
TBR’s view – Do Liverpool need to offer Wijnaldum a new deal?
The fact that Wijnaldum not only scored against West Ham on Monday night, but also turned out for the 35th time this season, proves he is worth a new Liverpool deal. He is showing no signs of slowing down, or losing a yard of pace.
Wijnaldum is an important cog in the Liverpool midfield, and with James Milner getting older and Adam Lallana set to leave in the summer, keeping the Dutch star is crucial. It means a new deal needs to be in the offing.
Indeed, January 2021 may see clubs become interested in Wijnaldum for a bargain price – and it may turn his head. Offering him a new deal, even before the summer, would be wise.
