George Edmundson’s Rangers future looks more precarious after Katic update

It is really difficult to predict whether Rangers defender George Edmundson will get an opportunity to save his Ibrox career.

, Edmundson – along with Jordan Jones – has been suspended for the Gers’ next seven domestic games after breaching Covid regulations.

The controversy has certainly done the 23-year-old no favours. He had only played in two games all season before this situation arose.

Those who feel that he may get a chance to put things right may point to a couple of his performances last season where Edmundson was outstanding.

However, it will not have escaped Rangers fans’ attention that Edmundson’s suspension ends just before the January transfer window. So Gerrard will have the perfect opportunity to move him on quickly if he does want him gone.

And if Edmundson’s future is up in the air as far as Gerrard is concerned, perhaps an update concerning his teammate may push the Englishman closer to the exit.

Edmundson currently looks to be Rangers’s fourth-choice centre-back. The Gers have been without Nikola Katic all season due to a knee injury.

No timeframe was initially put on Katic’s recovery. So there was always a chance that Edmundson may be needed to play an important role.

But Katic’s agent has now claimed – – that the Croatian is set to be back in January.

If Gerrard has Katic back at that stage, it arguably becomes even harder to see Edmundson getting another opportunity.

Of course, a loan could work out for all parties. Rangers may not be ready to cut all ties with Edmundson – who cost £700,000, . They also need to see how quickly Katic gets back up to speed.

But from the outside, Edmundson’s situation already looked precarious with the January window around the corner. Katic’s return makes his challenge look even tougher.
