Gattuso beats Tottenham and signs 23-year-old Argentine
Fiorentina and Gennaro Gattuso have completed the signing of Nicolas Gonzalez from Stuttgart. The Argentina international has been strongly linked with Tottenham recently, but Gattuso has won the race. Fiorentina’s Twitter account confirm that Gonzalez is now a part of La Viola’s side.
Gonzalez, 23, scored 14 goals in 27 games as Stuttgart returned to the top tier of German football – and then continued his form in the Bundesliga. While injury limited him to just 15 league appearances, he still scored six times and laid on two assists. Such form attracted the attention of Spurs.
Tottenham were looking at Gonzalez, and requested a £25million fee – £21.5million up front and £3.5million in add-ons. But Spurs, perhaps focusing on their defensive issues first, have missed out. Gattuso, who almost became Tottenham boss, has won the race for Gonzalez.
Have Tottenham missed a trick regarding Gonzalez – as Gattuso and Fiorentina strike?
No. Fabio Paratici has instead struck a brilliant-looking deal that sees Spurs pay little over £20million – less than Stuttgart want for Gonzalez – to get Spanish wonderkid Bryan Gil. It also sees Erik Lamela’s wages removed, making the player-plus-cash deal a better move than signing Gonzalez.
Gonzalez is a top talent. But he is already three years older than Gil – who is now a Spain international having impressed at the Olympics. Gonzalez would have been a good addition, but getting Gil – in the deal in which he has signed – is a much better move for Tottenham.
