Gary Neville thinks Ange Postecoglou is taking a ‘massive risk’ at Tottenham as he points out his big mistake
Ange Postecoglou will be desperate for the feel-good factor to return at Tottenham Hotspur as there is a an overwhelming sense of doom and gloom surrounding Spurs lately.
The best way Tottenham can do that is by returning to winning ways on the pitch.
Ange Postecoglou will need no reminding that the Lilywhites’ 3-2 scoreline in their damaging defeat against Everton flatters them as they were trailing 3-0 in the first-half.
Postecoglou still has Daniel Levy’s backing and despite how disappointing Tottenham have been this campaign, the former Celtic boss should feel relieved that he has been given the chance to turn things around.
The Tottenham dressing room is playing for Ange Postecoglou, which is a huge positive for the Australian as once the dressing room no longer wishes to play for the manager, it is time for them to pack their bags.
Furthermore, he Tottenham players are motivated by the cup competitions and perhaps this objective could help them get their season back on track as well.

Gary Neville tells Ange Postecoglou to stop playing high-flying full-backs
Currently, Spurs are sitting in 15th place in the Premier League and it would be unacceptable for one of English football’s greatest institutions to have a campaign that ends up with a finish in the bottom-half of the table.
Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
15 | 22 | 7 | 3 | 12 | 45 | 35 | 10 | 24 |
The argument was raised to Gary Neville that it is high-time that Ange Postecoglou adapts his tactics.
Neville agreed and urged the Tottenham boss not to play with such high-flying full-backs that leave his defence exposed.
The pundit said on The Overlap US’ show, ‘It’s Called Soccer!’: “You’re talking about really subtle things, aren’t you so you’re talking about the potential of the two full-backs not being as high up the pitch at the same time as early in the build-up of play.”
“Simple thing. One really simple thing that I would say is a massive risk. If you give the ball away in your own defensive third and your full-backs are too advanced, your centre-backs have got massive spaces alongside them, you’re likely to concede goals.”
“But that’s the way he plays, that’s the bit we loved about him last season. So I agree with you [Rebecca Lowe], that’s not exactly what I would do, I would adapt, I would like to see my football team adapt to different circumstances but he’s not going to do it.”
Jamie Carragher compared Tottenham to an academy team as well when dissecting how they play, which was a damning indictment of Ange Postecoglou’s attacking style of play.
While Jamie O’Hara questioned Ange Postecoglou’s position at Tottenham as the pressure is well and truly mounting on him.
Some Tottenham players feel Ange Postecoglou must change tactics
Some Tottenham players’ doubts about Ange Postecoglou’s tactics have creeped in as they feel that in some games, they do not have to have such an adventurous approach.
Journalist Ian Ladyman revealed: “Well, because they can still see signs of a really good manager in there. There’s not the toxicity around the club, that there was when they got rid of Antonio Conte, when they got rid of Jose Mourinho, famously a few days before League Cup final. Those two managers have got to a point where the building was about to burn down if they didn’t get them out, in terms of the players and relationships with staff, for example.”
“And it’s not like that with Postecoglou. The players like him. The players aren’t resisting him yet. Some of the players I think do have some doubts about whether maybe occasionally they could play in a slightly more restrained manner, but overall they are supportive. And also Tottenham, I think, for once, are being smart. They look at their situation.”
However, as Ian Ladyman clarified, Ange Postecoglou is still liked at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
But there seem to be some positives coming Postecoglou’s way.
Tottenham have received brilliant injury news about Micky van de Ven, as he is expected to return sooner from his injury than expected.
Cristian Romero has returned to training as well.
Once the pair are reunited, it is at least expected that Tottenham will make marked improvements and help Ange Postecoglou’s case.
