Gary Neville explains why Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has left him ‘stunned’ recently
Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been outstanding for England over the international break, trusted to play as a right-back under interim boss Lee Carsley.
Despite his form for Liverpool in the position, Gareth Southgate never seemed to trust Alexander-Arnoldꦑ as a right-back, or perhaps he was just too loyal to Kyle Walker.
⛦But in this fresh new England era, Alexander-Arnold now appears to be one of the first names on the team sheet for club and country.
🌱That’s not to say that Arne Slot doesn’t still have some reservations about the defender’s game, though.
Slot was fuming with Alexander-Arnold൲ at one point against Manchester United, despite how well the game was unfolding.
Gary Neville can’t believe how studied Trent Alexander-Arnold is about football
Speaking on the ‘’ podcast, Gary Neville✅ recalled an interview he had with the Liverpool defender last season.
💃Neville was speaking with Roy Keane and others, celebrating how good Alexander-Arnold was for England over the break.
𓂃And then the pundit shared how much the Liverpool defender shocked him in the interview.

🎶Neville said: “I interviewed him for two or three hours last season. Roy, honestly, I was stunned.”
𓂃“Honestly no I was mesmerised by, I was mesmerised by the fact that, you know, you have sort of, you look at someone, you think he’s a brilliant player, but then you look at him, I’ve been critical of him defensively, you’ve been critical of him.
☂“You’ve said he shouldn’t play in midfield. I could not believe how much he knew about football historically in the last 20, 25 years, and how many games he watched and how much into it he was.
ꦚ“And then maybe I shouldn’t be surprised but I couldn’t believe it. He was asking loads of questions, he was dead inquisitive.”
Liverpool need to sort Alexander-Arnold’s contract
🥀As he’s proved with Liverpool this season, Alexander-Arnold is clearly better at starting from a right-back position for club and country.
🐼Yes, the Liverpool star can be effective in the middle, but he’s much better entering that area from a deeper starting position.
ཧUltimately, Southgate was wrong to commit to such a big change at the Euros playing Alexander-Arnold in the middle, if that was the idea then it should have been well tested beforehand.
🦩Although in regards to Trent, Liverpool fans are probably a lot more preoccupied thinking about his contract situation right now.
And with that in mind, 🌼Steve McMamanan shared three key Liverpool contract updates recently.
