Gary Neville says Man United player would be a good partner for Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk

that he thinks Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof would form a good partnership with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk – but explains why the Swede does not fit alongside Harry Maguire.

Lindelof, 26, has been largely first choice this season, playing alongside Maguire. The 38-time Sweden international has benefited from Eric Bailly’s injury problems, while Axel Tuanzebe continues to be overlooked by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, criticism has come the former Benfica man’s way of late – especially after allowing Everton to score an injury-time equaliser and then failing to beat West Brom. Had they won those matches, Man City would only be three ahead, not seven.

Speaking about Lindelof and his partnership with Maguire, Neville explained that because Maguire is not “mobile” – Lindelof does not suit him. But preference will be given to Maguire due to his £80million asking price.

that Lindelof would suit van Dijk, or Rio Ferdinand: “Lindelof is a really good player. I think he understands the game, he reads the game. If he was alongside a Rio Ferdinand, or a Virgil van Djik, he would make a good pair.

“The problem is that he is alongside someone in Maguire that isn’t the most mobile. That’s the biggest problem Lindelof has got, if Liverpool were looking for a centre-back pairing – I think he would do really a good job for Liverpool alongside van Dijk.”

TBR’s view – Lindelof would not join Liverpool, but a good signing?

Clearly, United are not going to help Liverpool out by selling them a defender and it is unlikely that Liverpool would ever look to Manchester United to make a signing. But that aside, is Lindelof what Liverpool need?

Clearly, Ozan Kabak is one for the future, Nat Phillips could leave in the summer. Rhys Williams is still very inexperienced, and Jurgen Klopp’s stance on Ben Davies is up in the air. Lindelof would be a good addition.

The £31million () signing is good on the ball, strong in the air, an old-fashioned type of defender – but as Neville states, he needs a quick defender alongside him. But a move to Anfield, given he is a Manchester United player, is off the cards.
