‘They were wonderful’: Gary Neville says two unsung Liverpool players were ‘brilliant’ at Anfield yesterday

Gary Neville has lavished praise on a number of Liverpool players after they beat Manchester City 1-0 at Anfield yesterday.

A goal from Mo Salah was enough to get Liverpool back on track and end City’s unbeaten start to the season. It was a big moment from Salah, who has been struggling for form throughout the season so far.

From the outset, many had predicted a tough day for the Reds. A defensive injury crisis saw James Milner deployed at right-back with Joe Gomez moved alongside Virgil van Dijk. And in the end, the duo – along with Salah – caught .

“Today, we’ve seen something pretty spectacular. The right side of Liverpool’s defence, and Mo Salah which I think have been the two most under-performing areas of the team from the standards they’ve set over this last two to three years, I think have been brilliant today,” Neville said on .

“Gomez and Milner and then Salah up front, they were wonderful and it was obviously supported by a big effort from everyone else.”

Milner has been chastised at times this season for being past his best. However, his experienced showed in a huge game and Neville’s praise was more than justified here.

Keeping Haaland at bay was always going to be the story but it’s easy to forget City have a number of outstanding talents as well.

With that in mind, Milner and Gomez were outstanding and fully deserved to be on the winning side in the end.

The duo were excellent in keeping City at bay and with Virgil van Dijk also playing to his best, Liverpool once again looked like a team who most would struggle to score against.
