Gary Neville gives his opinion on whether Arsenal should sign Raheem Sterling from Chelsea on deadline day
Right now, Arsenal will be carefully attempting to balance their preparations for Brighton & Hove Albion as well as all of the chaos that deadline day brings.
Conducting their business on the final day of the window doesn’t typically seem to be Mikel Arteta or Edu’s style at Arsenal, but the club will be active in the coming hours.
Although Arsenal won’t be signing Victor Osimhen, they’re still in the market to potentially sign two goalkeepers, and maybe even a new forward.
That being said, Arsenal are considering a Raheem Sterling move according to reports, given the England international is free to leave Chelsea on deadline day.
Surprisingly, a lot of Arsenal supporters seem to be behind the idea, buoyed that a player of Sterling’s quality would be prepared to play a squad role at the Emirates.
But when speaking on , Gary Neville thought a deal could be a mistake.
Gary Neville urges Arsenal to avoid deadline day Raheem Sterling deal
Neville could certainly see why Chelsea were attempting to offload Sterling late on, but the pundit didn’t think Arsenal would benefit from the signing given the options they have already.
He said: “Arsenal have Jesus, Martinelli and Trossard who can play on that left side. They have Saka on the right side, who is so reliable and ever present.

“It doesn’t strike me as being something which makes sense but I can see why Chelsea want him out and the situation in the last couple of weeks means I suspect they are desperate to get him out in the next 10 or 12 hours.
“Raheem Sterling isn’t someone who is going to be bullied by Chelsea, if it’s not right for him he won’t go, so I suspect they may end up with him on Monday and will have to shake hands and get on with it for the next six months until January at least.”
Raheem Sterling isn’t an upgrade on Reiss Nelson for Arsenal
Of course, given his indifferent form over the past two years or so, it has to be asked – would Sterling actually be an upgrade on Reiss Nelson?
It’s believed that Arsenal would need to sell Nelson in order to welcome a new attacker to the club on deadline day.
And given the names linked with the club – Arsenal may also move for Kingsley Coman, there’s an argument to say that the Gunners would be better off holding firm.
Whoever comes in is only likely to be handed chances off of the bench in the coming months, and Nelson has already proved that he can do that role effectively.
And unless an irresistible opportunity arises, the Gunners should perhaps just wait until January or the summer beyond.
