Gary McAllister says Rangers have a ‘massive workhorse’ in their ranks whose attitude is ‘stunning’

Glasgow Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has waxed lyrical about Allan McGregor after the Ibrox goalkeeper penned a contract extension at the club.

The 39-year-old has been a superb player for the Gers over the years and has been instrumental for the Light Blues in their successful pursuit of title number 55.

McGregor has made 388 competitive senior appearances for Rangers over two spells, and has won four Scottish Premiership titles, five Scottish League Cups and three Scottish Cups.

This season, he has featured 37 times, keeping 20 clean sheets and conceding just 27 goals.

On Thursday, McGregor signed a one-year contract extension at Rangers, committing his future to the Ibrox club until the summer of 2022.

McAllister paid homage to the veteran stopper for the lengths he goes to in order to ensure he is as prepared as can be for every match.

“It was a no-brainer and I think he thoroughly deserves it as well,” McAllister told the Gers during Friday’s press conference ahead of their Scottish Cup third-round tie against Cove Rangers.

“He’s a massive workhorse – the way he comes in here every day and his preparation for games is pretty stunning.

“All goalkeepers work extremely hard – even during my time as a player and through working at clubs, goalkeepers are different – they have a different makeup to outfield players, but Allan really is something different.

“He is meticulous in his preparation, and it is no surprise the saves he makes – whether it be first minute, last minute, against a team at the bottom of the league, at the top of the league or in a European tie.

“His concentration and focus is there to be seen and I think it is well deserved that he has another year.”

What else can be said about McGregor that hasn’t been said? He continues to shine for Rangers and his place as an Ibrox legend is already assured.

Gers fans were ecstatic he penned a new deal, another year of one of the most reliable and hard-working keepers in the game playing for Steven Gerrard’s high-flyers.
