Gary Lineker thinks Leicester star could offer England ‘something different’ at the Euros

Leicester City legend Gary Lineker believes Jamie Vardy could give England manager Gareth Southgate “something different” to his other options up front.

The 34-year-old is once again in prolific form for the Foxes, having netted 14 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions this term, including 12 in 20 Premier League games, plus five assists.

Last season, meanwhile, Vardy won the Premier League Golden Boot award for topping the goalscoring charts with 23 goals, one ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Danny Ings.

Vardy stepped down from England duty in 2018 after 26 caps and seven goals to spend more time with his family, the Foxes ace mainly restricted to a back-up role to Harry Kane when called up.

Lineker is unsure whether the striker will return for the Euros, with captain Kane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin nailed-on to be included and Danny Ings also well in contention.

However, the Foxes legend thinks Vardy’s energy and runs in behind offer a different quality to the other strikers Southgate has at his disposal.

Asked about Vardy’s potential return for England, Lineker told : “I think it’s been mooted hasn’t it? It depends though as summer is still a few months away.

“If Harry is fit and flying, we’ve got Calvert-Lewin too and Ings is around.

“Jamie Vardy gives you something different to everyone because of his ability to get behind defences.

“Again it’s about numbers. This is the first time in a couple of decades where we are going to have to leave that great player out and it’s going to be really tough for Southgate.

“You’re only allowed 23 and three players from each position and three goalkeepers.

“The midfield and ahead of that the full-back positions we have plethora of really talented players which is great and it’s the best way for it to be.”

Vardy’s heroics for Leicester show no signs of stopping, much to the delight of the Foxes fans, and of course this will lead to talk of a potential role in the England team.

That said, part of his great form for the Foxes could be partly due to the fact he’s not got the additional workload at international level any more.

In addition, would he want to come out of retirement just for the Euros, taking the place of a player who took part in the qualifying rounds, just to play second fiddle to Kane once again?
