Gary Lineker suggests the referee made a serious mistake during Newcastle vs Liverpool
Newcastle and Liverpool played out one of the games of the season on Wednesday evening as they drew 3-3 at St James’ Park.
These two teams have a history of incredible clashes – who could forget the two 4-3 games in the mid-1990s?
Wednesday was another cracker, but, as ever, with any Premier League game these days, this game wasn’t without controversy.
Indeed, Jarell Quansah was in some hot water at one point as he seemed to foul Alexander Isak in the box.
Isak had an exceptional game against Liverpool, impressing rival supporters in the process.
The incident was waved away by the referee and VAR, but speaking on , Gary Lineker, Micah Richards and Martin Keown have shared their verdicts on this situation.

Gary Lineker says Newcastle should’ve had a penalty
Lineker shared his interpretation of this situation alongside Keown and Richards.
Kewon also believes this should’ve been a penalty, while Richards argued that Quansah got a bit of the ball.
“The defender dives in, I’m going to go with the ref because that’s what we want to do in the game, but, Gary, that looks like a penalty to me,” Keown said.
“I’m not certain he gets a touch on that.”
“He gets a little touch there, but he gets Isak as well,” Richards said.
“But it’s still a foul, it’s a foul,” Lineker said.
The other referee mistake in Newcastle vs Liverpool
The referee may well have misjudged this situation in this game, but this wasn’t the only semi-blunder the official made at St James’ Park.
Andy Madley was criticised for booking Alexis Mac Allister for a soft foul.
Meanwhile, right at the end of the game Andy Madley blew for full-time while Newcastle were launching a counter-attack, something which also caught Lineker’s eye.
“There there’s this, full-time, the referee blows when the ball is at the halfway line doesn’t he? I guess if time is up, time is up,” Lineker said.
As Lineker says, time was up, but referee’s usually do allow the phase of play to end before blowing the whistle.
Of course, there’s no saying that Newcastle would’ve scored from this break, but this did look like a promising counter that could’ve changed the game.
Stan Collymore scored a late goal for Liverpool in a 4-3 win all those years ago, but Newcastle were robbed of the chance of netting a late winner here by the referee.
