Gary Lineker suggests fans want £60m Arsenal player to be dropped at Euro 2024
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have shared what they’ve been hearing about one Arsenal player at Euro 2024 recently.
The group stage of this year’s European Championships is done, and we’ve witnessed all sorts of emotions already. From the despair of Croatia crashing out to the jubilation of Georgia going through, it has been a good competition so far.
Some Arsenal stars have been eliminated from Euro 2024, but many others have qualified for the knockout stages, where a few really exciting games are coming up.
One player who is expected to start for his side in the next round has come under a bit of criticism from fans of his own country.
Shearer and Lineker have now shed some light on the same.
What Germany fans are ‘shouting’ about Arsenal star Kai Havertz
Arsenal signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea for an initial £60 million fee ().
The Germany international divided opinion at the start of the 2023/24 season. Many people felt Mikel Arteta made a mistake signing the attacker, whose time at Chelsea was not particularly great.
Havertz came under a lot of criticism in his first few months as an Arsenal player, but in the second half of the campaign, he won over everyone.
The 25-year-old finished the 2023/24 campaign with 14 goals and seven assists, which is not a bad return at all for someone who spent a lot of the season in midfield.
Havertz also scored a goal and picked up an assist in Germany’s Euro 2024 opener against Scotland. He has started all three of their games and is expected to get the nod against Denmark in the next round as well.
However, Shearer and Lineker have revealed that they have heard German fans shouting that they want to see Niclas Fullkrug start ahead of Havertz.
Speaking on the , Shearer said: “I think that, from what I can gather, their fans are shouting and there’s a big discussion about Havertz or Fullkrug, isn’t it?”
Lineker replied: “Yes, I think the fans are wanting Fullkrug. He’s more of a traditional centre-forward, more than probably Havertz, who’s kind of, he’d be more of a false-nine, but I quite like him (Havertz) up there because I think he’s very intelligent.
“Fullkrug is a kind of old school, isn’t he?”

Should Germany drop Havertz?
Havertz’s style of play always opens the door for criticism. Unless he scores a goal or picks up an assist, people are always on his back.
However, Julian Nagelsmann, Mikel Arteta and Thomas Tuchel – who are all regarded as some of the best managers in the world – always start him in their sides.
That’s because Havertz offers so much to the team. He brings the best out of everyone around him by linking play up and creating space for them. He has played a big part in helping the likes of Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala thrive at Euro 2024 so far.
We can understand German fans’ frustrations, but Havertz has to start against Denmark on Saturday, and we believe he will.
That would be the right decision.
