Gary Lineker makes Championship top-two prediction as Leicester, Leeds, Ipswich and Southampton vie for promotion

Leicester City, Leeds United, Ipswich Town and Southampton are all vying for a top-two spot in the Championship this season.

The race for automatic promotion to the Premier League is heating up, with Enzo Maresca’s Foxes now just six points clear at the top.

Daniel Farke’s Whites have hit form at the perfect time and are now in the Championship‘s top two, snapping at Leicester’s heels with 72 points.

However, Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich have also hit form once again and are level on points with Leeds, though their goal difference keeps them third.

A few points further back you have Russell Martin’s Southampton. They’ve won just one of their last four in the league and are now on 67 points.

A lot can change in just a few matchdays though, so it’ll be exciting to see how Leicester, Leeds, Ipswich and Southampton fare over the next 12 games.

Gary Lineker has now given his prediction as to who he thinks will finish in the top two come the end of matchday 46.

He fancies the current top two – the Foxes and the Whites – to remain in the same position and return to the Premier League after just one year out.

“I think Leeds are a decent side,” he said on after the Whites’ FA Cup loss to Chelsea.

“I fancy… it’s Leicester and Leeds will probably be the two sides promoted back into the Premier League.

“I think they’ve both got probably Premier League squads, certainly Leicester.”

Leicester and Leeds frontrunners with Ipswich and Southampton snapping at their heels

The Championship is a tough old marathon, and it’s not always a guarantee that relegated teams can adjust to the rigours of the second tier and remain in pursuit of promotion.

Leeds and Leicester – and Southampton for that matter – have adapted well, and it’s also good to see another contender in Ipswich.

With 12 fixtures to go, it’s an exciting race for promotion and there will no doubt be many more twists and turns.
