Gary Lineker sends Twitter message in support of Arsenal player

Gary Lineker believes Arsenal defender David Luiz should have had his red card from the Wolves game rescinded.

The Brazilian was shown a red card by referee Craig Pawson just before the break after he clipped Willian Jose in the area.

And upon a VAR check, both the penalty and the dismissal were upheld.

Ruben Neves scored the resulting spot-kick to restore parity after Nicolas Pepe’s opener, and Joao Moutinho then completed the hosts’ comeback by claiming a second-half winner.

Numerous fans and pundits were left outraged by the decision, claiming that no foul was committed, that any contact made was minimal, and that Luiz made a clear attempt to avoid touching his opponent.

Arsenal appealed the decision, but the Football Association said the red card given to Luiz will stand.

In comparison, Southampton’s Jan Bednarek has had his red card overturned after a similar challenge on Manchester United’s Anthony Martial.

Lineker praised the FA’s decision on the Saints defender, but said the same should have applied to Luiz.

Luiz will now miss Saturday’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa, scheduled to kick off at 12:30pm.
