Gary Lineker says Man United already had the ‘perfect’ player for Ruben Amorim but Erik ten Hag sold him
Manchester United have had so many problems this season.
The Red Devils started the campaign with Erik ten Hag at the helm, and that was viewed by many as a terrible decision at the time.
United started the season terribly, and the decision makers at the club decided to sack Ten Hag in October following a defeat at West Ham United.
Ruben Amorim was brought in, and the 40-year-old has had problems too. One of them is that many of his players don’t really suit his system.
Gary Lineker thinks one player would’ve been the right fit under Amorim, but he was sold by Ten Hag’s Manchester United just a few months before the Portuguese tactician arrived.
Gary Lineker makes interesting point about Scott McTominay and Manchester United
Scott McTominay joined Manchester United’s youth system when he was just five years old.
The Scot came through the ranks at the club’s academy before breaking into the first team under Jose Mourinho back in 2017.
McTominay played 255 games for Manchester United in all competitions and helped them win the FA Cup and the League Cup in his final two years there.
Then, in the summer of 2024, Napoli came in with a £25.7 million offer for the Scotland international midfielder, and the Red Devils accepted that bid.
Now, after watching United struggle this season, Lineker has claimed that McTominay would actually be perfect for Amorim right now.
The pundit also claimed that things must be ‘rotten’ at Manchester United because players who leave them are succeeding elsewhere.
Lineker said on the Rest is Football podcast: “Talking about players who have left Man United, Scott McTominay, scored two more goals, one of them an absolute beauty for Napoli at the beginning of the week.
“It’s remarkable how well some of the United players that were there are doing now. It just jumped into my head because Scott McTominay is exactly the player I would say would actually work in an Amorim system. He’s what they need.
“I know they were half-forced to sell him because of this PSR and he’s a local lad and he was brought through, which we all think is nonsensical and a ridiculous feature of this particular rule.
“But, yeah, there’s him, Rashford looks like a different human being. So, it suggests and all the evidence is there that United, it’s kind of a bit rotten there at the minute.”

Scott McTominay’s stats since leaving Manchester United
The PSR regulations made things difficult for Manchester United last summer, so they were a bit forced to let McTominay go.
That has proved to be a really poor decision as the Scot is flying in Italy. Rio Ferdinand even compared McTominay to Jude Bellingham.
Games | Goals | Assists | |
Scott McTominay at Napoli | 30 | 9 | 4 |
Eight of McTominay’s nine goals have come in the Serie A this season. That is the same amount as Manchester United’s top scorer in the Premier League, Bruno Fernandes.
It’s safe to say that United have gone backwards since selling McTominay, but the midfielder is enjoying life in Italy and is getting better and better every week.
