Gary Lineker points out the big mistake Malo Gusto made for Chelsea during their 1-1 draw with Arsenal

With all said and done, Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea side gave another solid account of themselves against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

Perhaps some in blue may have been disappointed not to win, but both Chelsea and Arsenal had their chances, and ultimately a draw felt fair.

After 11 games played, Chelsea sit third in the Premier League, a position that Maresca must be happy with.

The Italian inherited a strong squad in west London, but it was one still full of individuals rather than a cohesive team.

But with a midfield duo of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia now emerging, Chelsea have developed a clear identity across the pitch.

Gary Lineker noticed Malo Gusto close his eyes before big headed chance

That being said, regardless of what defensive line Maresca chooses, Malo Gusto rarely misses a game, a versatile defender who has been relatively consistent this season.

Although, the signing may have been very disappointed to miss what was arguably the best chance of the game against Arsenal, a close range header in the 24th minute.

Gary Lineker discussed the chance on ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast and highlighted the mistake Gusto made in shutting his eyes as he made contact with the ball.

Lineker explained: “You see so many players missing headers like that. You know what it is, because I’ve kind of mentioned this before, but the ball comes over, and I think as you head it, there’s a tendency to close your eyes.

“And when you close your eyes, you dip your head, and if you watch it, I think he did exactly that, and then it comes off the top part of the forehead.

“I was taught by a guy called George Dewis when I was young, who was a great Leicester goal scorer for many years.

“And he used to say, you’ve got to keep your eyes open, keep your eyes open, and therefore you’ll see it right onto your forehead and it won’t go up in the air.

“And it’s a quite common weakness amongst players, but it was a fabulous chance.”

Enzo Maresca explains why he dropped Reece James vs Arsenal

With Marc Cucurella coming into the side to face Bukayo Saka on Sunday, Maresca chose to start Gusto ahead of Reece James on the right.

The Chelsea captain had started the last three Premier League games at either left or right-back.

But Maresca made the bold call to only use James for eight minutes against Arsenal, stressing that it was strictly a tactical decision.

He said: “Reece is fit and we are happy with him. Since he came back he has played all of the Premier League games and today we took a different decision.”
