Gary Lineker mocks Arsenal player on Twitter, shares support for another

Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Runarsson has been criticised by Gary Lineker as the Gunners man put in a poor performance for Mikel Arteta’s charges in the League Cup.

The 25-year-old was named in the starting XI for the quarter-final tie against holders Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium, but didn’t do well, to put it mildly.

Runarsson was beaten to the punch by Gabriel Jesus’ header in the third minute, which very much set the tone for the rest of the evening.

The Iceland international didn’t cover himself in glory for any of City’s goals, with the second a particularly bad moment for him and his team.

Runarsson allowed Riyad Mahrez’s tame free-kick to slip through his grasp and into the net, putting City 2-1 ahead after Alexandre Lacazette had equalised for Arsenal.

Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte rounded off the scoring for a 4-1 away victory and yet more soul-searching from the red side of North London.

And Lineker couldn’t help but have a pop at Runarsson on social media:

Before sharing his support for Mesut Ozil, who has been frozen out by Arteta and can only watch as his side continues to crumble:

Arsenal are back in action on Boxing Day, with London rivals Chelsea visiting the Emirates Stadium in a 5:30pm kickoff.
