Gary Lineker chooses whether he’d prefer to play for Arne Slot or Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

When Jurgen Klopp announced that he would be stepping down as Liverpool manager almost a year ago, many fans at Anfield feared for the worst.

Klopp was in charge of Liverpool for 489 games and won a Champions League medal and a Premier League trophy during his history-making time at the club.

When it came to replacing the German, most assumed that former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso would be rocking up at Anfield, a move that ultimately never happened.

Then, Ruben Amorim’s name was swirling around the Liverpool press, before it eventually became clear that Arne Slot would be joining from Feyenoord.

Leeds wanted Slot a year earlier from the Dutch side, but when Liverpool came calling, the English club got much more welcome response.

And in quite remarkable fashion, Slot now looks destined to land a major trophy in his first season.

Gary Lineker chooses Jurgen Klopp over Arne Slot for one reason

That being said, Gary Lineker and Micah Richards were asked who they’d rather play for, Klopp or Slot, on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast.

Perhaps with the benefit of a longer time in charge at Liverpool, both pundits chose Klopp, but were still very complimentary about his Dutch replacement in the process.

Richards replied first: “I’m going to say Klopp. I’m going to say Klopp because he’s got to three Champions League finals, the higher energy, winning the Premier League. Slot’s just come in.

“So yeah, I don’t mind a bit of tough love as well and I think Klopp’s got that. So I’m going to say Klopp.”

Lineker then added: “I always said I’d love to play for Klopp because of his dynamic, high-grade football.

“The old Gaggenpress create a lot of chances. You’d score a lot of goals, but I’ve enjoyed Slot’s game.

“I’d probably say Klopp only because of the amount of time that he served. Whereas, ask me again in three years’ time, and we might be going, Slot is the absolute best, but they’ve certainly got two exceptional coaches there.”

Arne Slot vs Jurgen Klopp so far at Liverpool

In comparison to Klopp’s 489 games in charge at Anfield, Slot has now been at the helm for 38 matches.

During his tenure, Klopp kept a remarkable record of 2.07 points per match – on the assumption that cup games also yield points for the benefit of comparison.

Amazingly, Slot has fared even better so far despite recently being eliminated by Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup.

Slot has a points per match record of 2.42 at Anfield, a seriously high figure.

For comparison, Sir Alex Ferguson’s was 2.02 at Manchester United and Jose Mourinho’s was 2.22 in his first spell at Chelsea.

If Slot continues at his current rate, which will admittedly be difficult, he could be set to eclipse all records across English football, a manager who is simply getting it right.
