Garth Crooks says Ryan Mason would have been his third choice as interim Spurs boss

that Ryan Mason would have been his third choice as interim manager at Tottenham Hotspur, following the sacking of Jose Mourinho earlier this week after just 17 months.

Mourinho was given his marching orders with the club exiting the Europa League early, and sitting in seventh place in the Premier League. He did put Spurs into the Carabao Cup final, but it was not enough to save the ‘Special One’.

Mason took training on Monday, having managed both the Under-18 and Under-23 side at Tottenham. Still only 29, the midfielder has now been given the job until the summer – and he won his first match in charge on Wednesday.

Spurs came from behind to beat Southampton 2-1, but ex-Tottenham attacker Crooks claims Mason would have been his third choice when it came to picking an interim manager – behind Chris Powell and Ledley King.

“I was surprised Daniel Levy installed Ryan Mason as caretaker manager before Chris Powell – Gareth Southgate’s England assistant – or first-team coach Ledley King, both of whom have considerably more experience,”

TBR’s view – Mason is re-engaging Tottenham fans

When Mourinho was installed as manager, it instantly disenchanted a large section of the Tottenham support. Not just because he had replaced club icon Mauricio Pochettino, but also because of his defensive style of play.

But Mason, a well-liked member of the Tottenham family, has already patched that up. Many are happy to see him get a chance, and he got off to a great start. There is still a chance of silverware and a top-four finish.

If Mason wins the cup on Sunday, and delivers Spurs into the top four – surely he deserves the role permanently?
