Garth Crooks once claimed new reported Tottenham target was the new Marcel Desailly

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma this summer as Jose Mourinho looks to form a reunion with the French giant in north London – and Garth Crooks once made a huge prediction about him.

Zouma, 25, was signed by Mourinho at Chelsea more than six years ago in January 2014 from St. Etienne. Since then, Zouma has played more than 100 times for the Blues – as well as going on loan three times to his old side, Everton and Stoke.

Under Frank Lampard, though, Zouma has enjoyed his best season yet. Clocking up 33 appearances in all competitions, the France international has been used more often than previously, despite competition from Antonio Rudiger and others.

Mourinho has sent a list of five targets to chairman Daniel Levy he wants signed in the coming months, and Zouma is one of those – with Jan Vertonghen due to leave and Juan Foyth also being linked with an exit.

Back in February 2015, Crooks claimed in that Zouma has the potential to match Chelsea icon and World Cup winner Marcel Desailly – after Zouma produced an excellent performance against Manchester City.

“Identifying a talented young footballer is one thing, but being prepared to play a rookie player – particularly in the big games – is a different matter entirely. I think we possibly have another Marcel Desailly in the making here,”

TBR’s view – Should Tottenham go after Zouma?

It completely depends on the price, but given that he has rid himself of the reputation as a central defender culpable of the odd mistake, with two excellent seasons at Everton and then this term at Chelsea, he is worth a decent outley.

But given Foyth and Vertonghen are expected to leave, Spurs need a central defender and one with plenty of Premier League experience, but one with pace and still only 25 could be ideal. If Spurs can sign him below £30million, they have done well.
