Gareth Southgate lauds ‘fabulous’ Leeds star Kalvin Phillips, after England form

England manager, Gareth Southgate, has lauded Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips as a ‘fabulous character’, after being impressed once again with the midfielder.

Phillips was once again called up by Southgate and played a key role in the win over Albania at the weekend. The Leeds man sat alongside Declan Rice in the middle of the park, bringing energy and composure to the game.

The Leeds star has often been criticised by some fans for not being up to international standard, despite his form for Leeds. But Southgate, speaking about both Rice and Phillips yesterday, is under no illusions about Phillips’ quality.

“I have to say I’ve been really pleased with Kalvin Phillips. He’s adapted really well to international football”, Southgate said. ()

“He’s a fantastic athlete, a fabulous character to have around, and he also uses the ball really well. So we’re pleased with those two guys in that area of the pitch.”

Phillips’ rise has been a phenomenal one really. As Southgate alludes to, he was picked before even playing a Premier League game. And as things stand, he’s looking a certainty for the Euros squad.

TBR View: Phillips deserves the credit, he’s been outstanding

For all the reasons we know some football fans like to hate on Leeds, you simply cannot deny that Kalvin Phillips is quality.

He’s proven it with Leeds and now he’s proving it with England. Sure, Declan Rice is the number one choice if we do go with one sitting midfielder. But Phillips more than holds his own, too.

The Leeds man should be proud of himself and Southgate’s praise here is just reward for a fine season.
