Gabby Agbonlahor now backs Newcastle to make shock move for £30m Arsenal player in January

Gabriel Agbonlahor has backed Newcastle United to make a shock move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in January.

Speaking on , the pundit explained why he believes Newcastle will have to replace Nick Pope in the near future.

Aaron Ramsdale has endured a difficult start to the season at Arsenal after losing his place in Mikel Arteta’s side to David Raya.

The 26-year-old hasn’t started in the Premier League since the 3-1 win over Manchester United in early September. Ramsdale was a key man at the Emirates Stadium last season and played a huge part in Arsenal’s push for the title.

It’s led to suggestions Ramsdale could push for a move next summer, with Raya the preferred choice between the sticks at the moment.

And Gabriel Agbonlahor has suggested that Newcastle could throw their hat in the ring for the goalkeeper.

Agbonlahor back Newcastle to move for Ramsdale

Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor claimed that Newcastle will have to look at replacing Pope in the future due to his ability with the ball at his feet.

“He [Ramsdale] has to go in January, Arteta has made it clear,” the former Aston Villa striker said. “I’m saying Newcastle – Newcastle or Chelsea for me.

“Pope’s a top shot-stopper but he can’t play with his feet. How long are Newcastle going to continue to play [like that].”

He added: “Every Premier League team near the top has got a keeper who can play from the back and Pope can’t.

“That’s the reason he’s maybe going to miss out on going to the Euros with England.”

Pope has been exceptional for the Magpies since arriving from Burnley last summer. The 31-year-old was among the best goalkeepers in the league last season, alongside Ramsdale.

While Agbonlahor makes a great point that Pope isn’t comfortable with the ball at his feet, it would be a surprise to see Newcastle move him on anytime soon.

Eddie Howe will be prioritising a new midfielder in the January window after Sandro Tonali’s ban.

Ramsdale is undoubtedly a top goalkeeper and the man would offer Newcastle a different kind of option between the sticks.

But the Magpies will have other priorities heading into the winter transfer window and it seems unnecessary to replace Pope at this stage.
