Gabby Agbonlahor delivers verdict on Aston Villa relegation fight
Gabby Agbonlahor has predicted that Aston Villa still have enough to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season, while stressing the importance of their home form.
The Midlands are due to play next on 4 April at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers, after the Premier League suspended fixtures until that date due to the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Dean Smith’s side are currently sat 19th in the league table as it stands two points from safety and have 10 games remaining in their season to avoid an automatic return to the Championship.
They finished as runners-up in the Carabao Cup this campaign after losing to Manchester City in the final, but have struggled to find real consistency in the league.
Ex-Villa striker Agbonlahor feels that his former side can stay in the top-flight due to their home form and has looked back to their 2-1 win over Watford in January, as he feels that’s the standard they need to recreate.
“When I look at that team I still feel like there is enough in there to stay up. With the right formation and the right selection I think there is enough there,”
“I couldn’t believe the atmosphere [against Watford] it was exactly like a 12th man. The Villa fans got the team that win, they stuck with them when they went 1-0 down. I think if the fans can keep doing that for every home game I back Villa to win every home game this season left.”
TBR’s View:
The interruption in the season may be coming at a good time, as they have lost their last five consecutive games across all competitions and have slipped into the bottom three of the league as a result.
It’s unclear on when football will definitely return, but a few weeks off should wipe the slate clean for a lot of struggling Villa stars and also give key player John McGinn more time to comeback from injury.
It’s absolutely vital that the club don’t slip back into the Championship straight away after only earning promotion last season, as historically it’s a tough division to get out of and they belong in the top-flight.
