Frenkie de Jong comments on Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn, and Spurs fans are delighted
that Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn is the toughest opponent he has faced, recalling a clash between Dutch rivals Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.
De Jong, 22, has since moved to Barcelona last summer from Ajax after clocking up 89 senior appearances for his boyhood side. He has since clocked up 37 matches for Barcelona, even scoring goals against Valencia and Real Betis.
Upon joining Barcelona for £65million (), de Jong claimed he almost joined Tottenham before securing a move to the Spanish giants: “I considered their [Tottenham] offer long and hard. Tottenham are a stable club,” he told
Back at Ajax, de Jong was used as a centre-back at times by Ajax given their free-flowing passing from the back. It saw the holding midfielder play in defence against PSV and Bergwijn, and claims his Netherlands teammate is the hardest he has faced.
“It is difficult, because of course I don’t only play against one player during a match. But at Ajax I was sometimes used as a defender and we played against PSV. Steven Bergwijn is then the most difficult opponent for me,”
Bergwijn joined Tottenham in the January transfer window, after scoring 31 goals and creating 41 more in 149 outings for his boyhood club. Since moving to Spurs, he has netted twice in seven outings – including an excellent volley against Man City.
Tottenham supporters responded to the news that de Jong has somewhat surprisingly picked Spurs ace Bergwijn as the toughest he has faced, and many are excited to see Bergwijn shine in a Spurs shirt.
