French media deliver their verdicts on William Saliba’s display in their win over Israel

Arsenal defender William Saliba once again featured for France as they secured a comfortable 4-1 win against Israel in a UEFA Nations League clash.

Goals from Eduardo Camavinga, Christopher Nkunku, Matteo Guendouzi and Bradley Barcola spearheaded Didier Deschamps’s side to all three points as Omri Gandelman’s first-half strike for Israel turned out to be nothing more than a consolation.

Saliba was stationed at the heart of the French backline alongside Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate.

And although the scoreline suggests it was a routine win for the home side, the Arsenal defender wasn’t at his imperious best.

France took the lead as Camavinga’s tame effort found its way into the back of the net, but Israel struck back through Gandelman as he ran clear of Saliba to score a fantastic headed goal off the post.

rated Saliba 5/10 as they pointed out his role in Israel’s equaliser.

“A tough match too, even if he was caught in the back by Gandelman (24th) on the Israeli goal. Behind, he controlled the defense with great aplomb.

“Very interesting in his long passes, like a millimeter opening for Nkunku (21st), he was at the origin of the fourth French goal on a beautiful recovery.”

felt he could have done better to prevent Gandelman’s goal, although they did give him a slightly higher 6/10 rating as his overall performance was largely acceptable.

“Arsenal’s central defender was not very visible but he still made his mark with a poor reading of Gloukh’s cross for Gandelman’s equaliser. An action that slightly spoils his overall performance.”

were a bit kinder with their assessment of the Arsenal defender as they noted that Saliba barely gave the Israeli attackers a sniff after being caught out for their goal.

“Imperial with the Gunners, the ex-OM defender generally held his own.

“If he was surprised in the air after covering his direct opponent on the Israeli equalizer, he then left nothing to the Israeli attackers, who were very discreet. A serious match.”

Saliba’s stats vs Israel

Saliba played the full 90 minutes and had 102 touches of the ball, which is an indication that he was in the thick of the action for France.

He completed 95/98 of his passes and made one tackle and interception apiece, while he was dribbled past once during the game.

The Arsenal defender could have done better for the first goal but didn’t do too much wrong otherwise as he finished the game with a rating of 6.8.
