Freddie Ljungberg sends bold message to Arsenal hierarchy in wake of Europa League exit
Arsenal icon Freddie Ljungberg says “there needs to be a change” in how the Gunners hierarchy invests in the club.
Mikel Arteta’s charges were knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday at the hands of Villarreal.
The damage was done last week when Unai Emery’s charges ran out 2-1 winners in Spain before holding Arsenal to a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal currently sit 10th in the Premier League table and are out of all cup competitions, so barring an extraordinary turn of events in the league, their season is all-but over.
Last season, the Gunners won the FA Cup and Community Shield, while a number of exciting signings, such as Thomas Partey, meant optimism was high for 2020-21.
However, Arsenal’s campaign has effectively fizzled out, and it’s very unlikely that the north Londoners will even qualify for Europe now.
“I hope that this is the rock bottom and it can change from here,” Ljungberg is quoted by Optus Sport as . “But it needs investment to ensure that.
“It really, really hurts but I think there needs to be a change in how they invest into the club, and change the pattern that we get worse and worse every year.”

It’s been such a disappointing campaign for Arsenal, with fans having very little in terms of highlights this term.
From the European Super League fiasco and criticism of Stan Kroenke to Arteta and his charges flattering to deceive, the Gunners can’t continue like this.
Will Daniel Ek manage to take over the club over the summer? This remains to be seen, but it would certainly bring optimism back to the Emirates.
