Fraser Forster return gives Celtic perfect chance to sign 2018 target Angus Gunn – TBR View

It seems Celtic are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper, as last season’s number one Fraser Forster is set to return to parent club Southampton following his loan stint back at Parkhead.

Plenty of names have since been linked with a move to take his place, including the likes of David Marshall, Joe Hart, and Vasilis Barkas.

But could the decision from Southampton to give Forster a chance also hand Celtic the perfect replacement.

, Forster is now expected to battle for the number one spot at St Mary’s with Alex McCarthy.

Which means they are happy to say goodbye to Angus Gunn. are even suggesting he could be allowed out on loan.

Gunn is considered a top prospect and Southampton paid a £13.5 million to bring the England under-21 star in from Manchester City in 2018.

Unfortunately, the 6ft 5ins talent has struggled to showcase his best form at St Mary’s but remains a serious prospect.

The 24-year-old, whose father is former Scotland international goalkeeper Bryan Gunn, could be a perfect long-term option for Celtic going forward.

Indeed, Brendan Rodgers reportedly wanted Gunn in 2018, following his sensational loan stint at Norwich City.

that Rodgers was considering a loan deal for Gunn that summer as cover for the injury-prone Craig Gordon. Ironically, it was Rodgers’ Leicester who appear to have killed his Southampton career, after his Leicester City team slammed nine goals past Gunn in a 9-0 win back in October.

Gunn is also still on the radar of the Scottish national team, with his chances of playing for England reduced. Playing for Celtic regularly would undoubtedly give him a great chance of selection by Steve Clarke.

Celtic and Gunn could be a perfect fit and the Bhoys clearly have a good relationship with the Saints, having re-signed Mo Elyounoussi from the club this summer.

If Forster really is not coming back to Celtic, then Gunn is the target Neil Lennon should be shooting for.
