Frank McAvennie names striker he wants at West Ham

Frank McAvennie that he would love to see West Ham United sign Lawrence Shankland, and expressed his disbelief that a Premier League side has not taken a gamble on the striker.

Shankland is enjoying another remarkable season in the Scottish Championship. He has scored 27 goals in just 28 games, including 23 in 21 league games for Dundee United.

Some may have their concerns about the level he is playing at. But former Hammers star McAvennie insisted that he should have been a player David Moyes took a gamble on last month.

“He’s got to go to England and I’d love him at West Ham,” . “I can’t believe a top Championship club or a Premier League club near the bottom of the table didn’t come in for him in the transfer window.

“If someone called me up and asked me about Lawrence Shankland, I’d tell them to take a chance on him.

“The strikers at West Ham are big lads but they don’t have the mobility of Shankland. His movement in the box is brilliant. He’s a proper striker, you can’t teach what he’s got.”

It is arguably a surprise that the Irons did not strengthen their striker options in January.

Sebastien Haller has had a mixed time since coming to the Premier League. And Albian Ajeti has been unable to inspire much confidence from the supporters.

Jarrod Bowen was signed as the January deadline loomed. But he played his best football for Hull City when used in a wider role.

Shankland has proved as much as he arguably can in Scotland’s second tier. Since joining Ayr in 2017, he has scored 73 goals in 82 league games.

It is a staggering record. And you could certainly understand why McAvennie is such a fan of the Scotland international.

It would be no surprise if many clubs were monitoring his form and weighing up whether he is capable of making a step up.

McAvennie is clearly hoping that West Ham will put themselves amongst his admirers sooner or later.
