Four reasons why Tottenham should sign Everton’s Ross Barkley
If reports from are to be believed, London side Tottenham could make a move for Everton’s Ross Barkley.
The Toffees have been one of the most active clubs in the current transfer window, as manager Ronald Koeman looks to stamp his authority on the team, but he could face losing the English play maker, who is yet to sign a new contract at Goodison Park.
Barkley could head to London, with Sky Sports linking him to Spurs. However, not for Everton’s current valuation. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are unwilling to pay what Everton want, but a negotiated deal could be on the cards.
The 23-year-old could turn out to be a very clever signing should it go ahead. Here are four reasons why Tottenham need to sign the Everton midfielder:
Squad Depth
In the past two seasons, Spurs have made a really good go at the league, but they have ultimately finished as runners-up the previous two outings, losing out to Chelsea last year and Leicester the year before.
Part of this is due to the team’s lack of squad depth. Beyond Tottenham’s starting eleven, they lack quality. When injuries damage crucial players, like Harry Kane, it often correlates to a dip in form for Pochettino’s side.
Barkley would not only help solve this problem but he would also challenge Heung-Min Son, Christian Eriksen, and fellow countryman Dele Alli, to a starting role.
Flexibility
Ross Barkley is a player who is able to occupy a number of attacking roles. Last season, in Everton’s 4-2-3-1 – the same system which Pochettino often uses for his side – the 23-year-old featured in all three attacking midfield positions, though mainly through the middle, where he made 14 appearances.
This versatility is something very useful and something quite rare in a player, and Barkley’s ability to cover various positions would be valuable for Spurs next season.
English chemistry
Tottenham host a range of English talents. Alongside full-backs Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier, midfielder Eric Dier and forward pair Dele Alli and Harry Kane, who are arguably two best Englishmen in the league, Ross Barkley would slot right into this Spurs side. Having played in England’s national side with Kane and co., Barkley already has a connection with the players he would join.
Youth
At 23 years of age, like many of Pochettino’s men, Barkley has his whole career ahead of him. If he was to join Spurs, not only would he be able to play first-team football immediately, he would improve in the long-term as well.
Having slightly stalled at Everton, new surroundings and competition alongside other young, hungry players could bring the best out of Barkley.
