Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol wants Maddison to replace Wijnaldum

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol wants to see the club sign Leicester City midfielder James Maddison this summer.

The 57-year-old has been majorly impressed by the £20 million signing from Norwich City () since his move to the King Power last year and reckons he has what it takes to move to a bigger club.

Interestingly Liverpool were actually linked with a £60 million summer swoop for Maddison in early June .

There has been no movement from the Reds as of yet, but Nicol would love to see a move happen.

He believes that Maddison going to Anfield would see popular midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum lose his place in the starting XI.

: “Maybe a starter, for me [he would be] a starter, James Maddison. ‘He’s a player who does in my opinion all the things that Klopp wants his middle three to do right now.

“You put him in the middle. I’d suggest because Jordan Henderson’s the captain right now it’d have to be ahead of Gini Wijnaldum.

“I think Wijnaldum starts right now because he has a goal or two in him but for me Maddison would take over that because he has a goal or two in him [as well].”

TBR’s view

Maddison is a fantastic prospect, but Nicol’s view will not be shared by the majority of Reds supporters, who adore their Dutch midfield maestro.

£75,000-a-week star Wijnaldum () had his best season yet for the club in 2018/19, and is an important part of the Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI.

Perhaps he doesn’t post the best statistics in terms of goals and assists, but his pressing and passing are generally outstanding.
