Former Celtic manager Tony Mowbray full of praise for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side
Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray was full of praise for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side after the teams drew 1-1 at Ibrox yesterday.
Mowbray, who managed Celtic between 2009 and 2010, warned his old club that Rangers will be a force to be reckoned with this season.
He : “They are a very well coached team. You can see already what Stevie has done. He is putting together a team which has an identity.
“We played Liverpool this time last season and they play the same 4-3-3 formation. They press high from the front, they drop their midfielders deep and try and overload you. They suck you on top of them then play through. You can see they are going to be a force this season.”

Gerrard has been brought to Rangers in order to close the gap to Celtic and as well as drawing on his contacts book at Liverpool, it’s no surprise that he’s taken some tactical pointers from Jurgen Klopp as well.
It’s perhaps rare to hear someone with Celtic connections be so effusive in his praise of a Rangers side, but Mowbray is speaking purely as an opposing manager who had admiration for what he’d just seen.
The test for Rangers this season is to get greater consistency in their performances, keeping their level high even against the lesser lights – that’s the only way they’re going to wrestle silverware away from their bitter rivals.
