Former Arsenal star lauds ‘unbelievable’ Josh Doig amid links with Mikel Arteta’s side

Matt Macey has lauded Josh Doig as an ‘unbelievable’ talent – via the – amid reports linking his former side Arsenal with a move for the Hibernian defender.

The Gunners have held an interest in Doig for some time, with citing Mikel Arteta’s side as a potential suitor for the 19-year-old in January, while claim he is now a potential summer target.

Manchester City, Leeds United, Celtic and Chelsea were also during the winter, although the Blues stepped back after appointing Thomas Tuchel, and Leicester City are now considered to be with the Foxes hopeful of a deal.

Arsenal have to sign Doig, but are attracted by his potential and that he would not count towards their maximum of 17 foreign players over the age of 21 when submitting next season’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Arteta ramping up the Gunners’ interest over the summer may seemingly land the Spaniard a highly promising talent, with Macey – who in north London – waxing lyrical over Doig’s potential having played alongside him at Hibs this season.

“He’s been unbelievable. Since I have come in, he has played almost every game and to have that level of consistency at that age is not something I have seen before,” Macey .

“That’s the key, you can be a great player and play here and there and you see that from young players from time to time. But I don’t think people appreciate or give him the respect he deserves for the level of consistency he has reached.

“And if he has that now, it’s frightening to think what he could become in the future. He’s a top, top player.”

TBR’s view:

Doig has clearly caught the eye of some of the Premier League’s biggest teams and Arsenal have an interesting reason behind their interest, in considering his services as he would not count towards their Premier League quota.

He also plays in a position where they may need to target options in the summer with Arteta frequently forced to deploy unnatural players at left-back when without Kieran Tierney, and could unearth a gem by raiding Hibs.

Macey clearly thinks very highly of Doig, and the Scotland U19 international added a creative flare to his game with in all competitions coming in 2021 – suggesting he could be a very worthwhile understudy for Tierney.
