Form of Lucas Digne is a worrying omen for Brendan Galloway

For several years now, Everton have been searching for their Leighton Baines successor and it looks like Lucas Digne is that man.

Digne arrived in the summer transfer window from Barcelona and is already an established member of the squad.

It looks like he has forced Baines into a bit-part role and this could have even more serious repercussions for academy product Brendan Galloway.

The 22-year-old was once regarded as Baines’ long-term replacement but his progress has since stalled.

The England under-21 international has had unsuccessful loan spells with West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland.

Those early hopes that he might force Baines out of the first-team picture have long faded. Baines is 33 now and he is coming towards the end of a long and illustrious Toffees career.

It is time for him to pass the baton on to Digne and let a youngster step up as back-up choice.

Consequently, he has dropped down the pecking order at Everton.

Age is no longer on Galloway’s side and another youngster, Antonee Robinson, is impressing out on loan.

Moving forward, Everton might see Digne as their first-choice left-back, with Robinson as his back-up.

But where does this leave Galloway? For the sake of his own career, he may need to look for a January exit, either on loan or preferably permanently.
