Five surprises in Allardyce’s England squad feat. Manchester United and West Ham stars
Jermain Defoe
The veteran striker was once one of the first names onto an England squad list as he picked up 55 caps, scoring 19 goals in the process. Now aged 33, but back in the Premier League after a short spell in Toronto, Defoe’s form was vital as Allardyce saved Sunderland from the drop last summer, where he scored 18 in 33.
Defoe has proved in his time at Sunderland that he is more than capable of playing as the focal point of an attack, or as a lone striker, and has showed a physical strength and ability to battle for aerial balls and press.
He has demonstrated that he can offer far more than was previously thought, and with his experience could well help to develop the younger strikers coming through England’s ranks, such as Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford. Whilst England’s forwards all ran out of form at the wrong time this summer, Defoe is in some of the best form of his life.
Aaron Cresswell
Another player to have played under Allardyce previously, this time at Upton Park, the former Bolton boss brought left back Cresswell to the Hammers from Ipswich in one of the Premier League’s best bargains in recent years as he continues to impress.
Whilst Danny Rose dominated the left-back position under Hodgson of late, with Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand providing competition, Cresswell could easily compete with both of them in terms of quality and has shown his consistent form for two seasons in the Premier League now.
Having only missed one Premier League game in two years, the ex-Millwall defender won the Hammers’ player of the year award in 2015 and impressed again last season, so will be high on the list of players who could be given preferential treatment by Allardyce over the likes of Bertrand.
