Five ins and outs Newcastle could complete this week

The turbulent times continue at Newcastle United and Rafael Benitez is trying desperately to steady the ship ahead of the new campaign.

With just a few weeks to go until the 2018-19 season commences, Benitez has frustratingly seen his finances limited by Mike Ashley and it has restricted the work he is able to do in the transfer market.

The Magpies have had to balance their funds carefully and Benitez will have to sell in order to buy in the final weeks of the transfer window – which he intends to do as a number of deals are being touted by the media.

With Newcastle still in need of additions to their squad, we have identified five deals that could go ahead this week.

Diego Reyes – Free agent

Newcastle have already taken advantage of the free agency market this summer by signing South Korea international Ki Sung-Yeung and they are said to be eyeing another player who featured at the World Cup.

names Newcastle as candidates for the signature of Diego Reyes alongside West Ham and Fenerbache, after the 25-year-old saw his contract with Porto expire during the course of the summer – ending a five-year association with the club.

Capped 53 times by Mexico, Reyes could be the ideal partner for Jamaal Lascelles at St. James’ Park next season and his experience would prove to be a vital asset for a club looking to remain afloat in the Premier League.

Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham

Aleksandar Mitrovic found himself surplus to requirements in the eyes of Rafael Benitez last season but showed the world what he is made of following a successful loan stint with Fulham, helping the Cottagers seal promotion to the Premier League.

Fulham’s desire to bring the Serbia international to the club on a permanent basis is no secret and Newcastle are ready to sell for the right price, with the  stating a deal will be pushed through when he returns from holiday this week.

“He’s our player. But obviously he has different clubs interested in him. We’ll see if we can find a solution for everyone. Everybody can be happy with that.”

Salomon Rondon – West Brom

The funds from the sale of Aleksandar Mitrovic are expected to be immediately reinvested by Rafael Benitez on a new striker, as he seeks the services of Salomon Rondon from relegated outfit West Brom.

According to reports from , Newcastle are exploring the possibility of sending Dwight Gayle to the Baggies as makeweight in a deal worth around £16.5 million after West Brom rejected an approach for a loan deal.

However, the  has since added Newcastle will not approve such a move.

The  has also stated Newcastle were offered the opportunity to re-sign Islam Slimani following his loan stint from Leicester in the second-half of last term but rejected that deal, with Rondon their prime target.

Thiago Mendes – Lille

Newcastle’s search for midfield additions following the loss of Mikel Merino to Real Sociedad continues, with Rafael Benitez’s side named by as one of many clubs interested in Lille’s Brazil ace Thiago Mendes.

West Ham, Crystal Palace, Huddersfield, Lazio and Wolfsburgs are also stated to be chasing the 26-year-old holding midfielder, who only signed for Lille last year and is valued by the French side at a hefty £18 million – a fee which Newcastle are unlikely to afford.

If Mike Ashley truly wants Benitez to remain at St. James’ Park though, he may have to part with funds for significant signings and this is certainly a transfer fans should be keeping a close eye on.

Miguel Almiron – Atlanta United

Newcastle and West Ham continue to come across the same targets in the transfer market, as states both Premier League sides are chasing a deal worth around £10 million for Atlanta United’s Paraguay international Miguel Almiron.

The attacking midfielder is widely regarded to be one of the finest players within MLS and the American side, currently sat top of the Eastern Conference and favourites to win the MLS Cup later this year, are determined not to sell.

24-year-old Almiron is open to a move to England though and that should encourage Newcastle to make a bid, although a deal is more likely in January when MLS’ season has reached it’s conclusion.
