Five former Bournemouth players Scott Parker should target this summer

In his first season as manager of Bournemouth, Scott Parker has guided the Cherries back up to the Premier League via automatic promotion.

Despite enduring a dip in form in the quest to secure automatic promotion, Parker’s men came up trumps in an effective promotion decider with Nottingham Forest in the penultimate match of the season.

The Vitality Stadium side return to the Premier League after a two-year absence and will be in the big time for the first time without Eddie Howe in the dugout.

The Cherries will be hoping to replicate Brentford’s dazzling season in the top-flight under the tutelage of Thomas Frank, instead of dropping straight back down like Norwich City and Watford did.

While Howe is no longer on the south coast, Bournemouth could look to re-sign some of the Newcastle manager’s former Cherries players this summer.

Bringing back the likes of Callum Wilson, Aaron Ramsdale and Arnaut Danjuma would be the dream, but Bournemouth fans have to be realistic.

Matt Ritchie

Despite reuniting with Howe at St James’ Park, following the former Bournemouth manager replacing Steve Bruce, Ritchie has barely featured for the Magpies.

The 32-year-old, who joined Newcastle in the summer of 2016 from Howe’s Bournemouth, has played eight times under Howe on Tyneside.

But following the arrival of Matt Targett on loan in January, Ritchie has made just two appearances despite starting the first 13 Premier League games of the season.

With Newcastle likely to splash the cash again this summer, Ritchie could be one of several first-team players that are moved on by the Toon Army this summer.

Ritchie is set to enter the final year of his current Newcastle contract this summer, and the that Bournemouth are interested in re-signing the versatile left-footer who play at left-back or on the wing.

Of all the former Bournemouth players Parker should target, Ritchie could potentially be the easiest deal to negotiate.

Nathan Ake

Manchester City splashed out to sign Ake from Bournemouth in August 2020, but the Netherlands international has only made 40 appearances across his two seasons at the Etihad.

While the 27-year-old has won back-to-back Premier League titles under Pep Guardiola, with a World Cup less than six months away, Ake may want to play more frequently to bolster his chances of featuring in Qatar under Louis van Gaal.

If the Citizens sign another centre-back this summer, Bournemouth could tempt both City and Ake with a season-long loan offer.

Ake’s a class act and his return at the heart of Bournemouth’s defence would represent a huge coup and boost for the Cherries.

From one impressive centre-back to another. Tottenham loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers has agreed personal terms with Celtic, but that doesn’t mean the Cherries cannot try hijacking the deal.

The American international has impressed during his season north of the border and the lure of Champions League football could see him stay at Parkhead.

But the 24-year-old hasn’t yet played and impressed in the Premier League. With Bournemouth back in the top-flight, Parker could try and sway Carter-Vickers mind by making him the vocal point of the Cherries defence, in a league he may feel he has unfinished business with.

The eight-time USA international made 27 appearances for Bournemouth last season and was a key part of the side that reached the play-offs.

Joshua King

It hasn’t worked out for the Norwegian since he departed the south coast for Merseyside last February.

After a barren 11-game spell with Everton, King moved to Watford in the summer, but the Hornets have been relegated to the Championship.

The 30-year-old produced the best football of his career at the Vitality Stadium and with Parker needing firepower to lighten the burden on star man Dominic Solanke, King could be an attractive option this summer.

A return to familiar surroundings could help reignite King’s best form and if he can get anywhere near close to rekindling the form, which saw him score 16 Premier League goals in the 2016-17 campaign, it would represent money well spent by the Cherries.

Danny Ings

Of the former Bournemouth players Parker should target, Ings could prove to be the most expensive.

Aston Villa signed the three-time England international from Southampton for last summer and in his first season at Villa Park, Ings scored seven Premier League goals.

With Aston Villa’s potential 2022/23 starting XI involving a former Liverpool and Barcelona superstar, Ings’ playing time may reduce next year if Steven Gerrard’s maintains his impressive start to the summer transfer window.

Before joining Burnley in August 2011, Ings had scored eight goals from 30 games for the Cherries. A product of the Bournemouth Academy, the Winchester-born Ings could shine upon a return to the south coast.
