Five bright talents who could be next to breakthrough at Southampton

Southampton Football Club boast a half-decent academy. That much has been proven in recent years. If you don’t believe me, check out this piece I did over a year ago, highlighting a ‘could have been’ Southampton XI.

Now some people, notably those involved in youth football in southern England, point out that this plethora of players, coming from all over the country is because of satellite bases that the Saints have across the south, and south west of England.

The satellite Southampton FC base in Bath is one example of this, and this is where Gareth Bale started on his journey to stardom – being close to his Cardiff home. In fact, three of the five players in this list are West Country boys who were picked up by Southampton rather than the likes of Yeovil Town or AFC Bournemouth.

Regardless of whether you agree with satellite academies or not, you are very hard pushed to argue against Southampton’s track record of churning out top players – helpful when seemingly every summer about three or four key players depart St. Mary’s.
