‘First class’: Kennedy tips Celtic to pursue £16m Premier League forward
Neither John Kennedy or Moi Elyounoussi know if they will bet at Celtic next season, but the former has tipped his current employer to pursue the latter.
In a dismal season for Celtic, Elyounoussi has been one of the few positives.
He’s produced a number of impressive performances and become a popular figure among supporters.
The Norwegian was signed by Southampton from Swiss side Basel in 2018 for £16 million, but failed to find the target in 19 appearances during his debut season.
Neil Lennon brought him to Celtic on loan in 2019, and after a promising stint that deal was extended to cover 2020/21.
He’s gone on to score 16 goals in 40 matches, including a diving header in last month’s 1-1 draw with Rangers, and interim boss Kennedy has spoken of the 26-year-old in glowing terms.
As quoted by the , he said: “I think he’s the calibre of player you want to try to attract to your club.
“When you’ve worked with a player you know the quality they have, you get to see them up close and what you really like.
“Moi’s character and his levels, in terms of training, he’s first class in everything he does. He’s one of the best professionals I’ve worked with.
“He really looks after his body, he commits to training and every drill you do each day.
“When he’s on form he’s a very good player.
“We’ll have to address that in the summer if it’s a possibility. If it is a possibility I’m pretty sure the club will look closely at that.”
Addressing the potential cost for Celtic in relation to the £16 million paid for him by the Premier League club, Kennedy said: “It depends on the situation.
“When players are bought it doesn’t always mean that’s what they are valued at going forwards.
“The discussion between the clubs isn’t one I’d go into and say to put a value on it.
“The club will look at what they have in the squad, what’s available and if a deal can be done.
“It probably won’t take place until the summer, so we will focus on making the most of having Moi and getting the most out of him we can.”
