Tanganga has been the subject of speculation over his future throughout the summer, previously rejecting a £13.5m bid for the young defender.

Leeds have also been credited with interest in the former England under-21 international in recent days.

Tanganga prefers to join AC Milan over Forest this summer

“Japhet Tanganga, Nottingham Forest want him, but his first choice is AC Milan.

“Spurs and AC Milan have had quite advanced talks over him, still a stumbling block with them has always been, AC Milan are willing to put an option in to buy Tanganga, but Spurs want an obligation to buy him for €25m (£21.2m).

“In one respect it’s quite sad, as it sort of shows they’re giving up on him, on the other hand it’s quite big money, so they would be doing very well out of an academy product.

“With poor old Japhet, it’s just been injuries. Every time he’s got a run of games, he’s got injured, then he’s come back in and he’s been a bit out of rhythm and hasn’t looked too great.

(Antonio) Conte used him a fair bit and Nuno (Espirito Santo) was using him at the start of the season, and (Jose) Mourinho gave him his Premier League debut, (Mauricio Pochettino) Poch had used him as well.

“We’ll see what happens with that, whether Milan are able to strike a deal, that’s where Japhet wants to go if he has to leave the club, and if not then maybe Forest could make a better deal.”

Tanganga victim of Conte system, Forest could offer a new opportunity

The 23-year-old has had to compete with new signings and a change in system under Conte that limits his versatility.

Previously able to play across the back line under previous Tottenham managers, he’s not a strong enough player going forward to be a wing-back in the Italian’s system.

He’s also behind a number of centre-backs in the pecking order at Spurs, and so would likely struggle for game time even though Tottenham are competing on multiple fronts this season.

Nottingham Forest would offer him a chance to prove himself in the Premier League, but they also play with advanced wing-backs.

He could break into the side in the middle of defence, .

However, it’s difficult for Forest to compete with the appeal of a new challenge in Serie A for Tanganga.

Gold does offer some hope to Steve Cooper’s side that a deal isn’t finalised yet, and anything can happen in the final week of the transfer window.
