Fernando Torres delivers honest verdict on Liverpool star Diogo Jota

Diogo Jota scored his fifth goal of the season for Liverpool on Wednesday night against Atletico Madrid –

Jota, 24, scored his 18th goal in Liverpool colours when he got on the end of an inch-perfect delivery from Trent Alexander-Arnold to head home.

Liverpool won 2-0, as Sadio Mane got a second. A brilliant win for Liverpool, which sees them clock up 12 points from a possible 12 in Europe.

It was only the third time Jota has clocked up 90 minutes for Liverpool this season. But he was excellent, giving Jurgen Klopp something to think about.

as two of his old sides did battle, the Spaniard applauded Jota for his performance – and his time at Liverpool.

“Diogo Jota was really young when he came to Atletico. We shared a pre-season together,” Torres said on Jota.

“It’s really nice to see how he is improving and being a really important player, starting for Liverpool many times and scoring goals.”

Torres on Jota: Liverpool ace is only going to get better

Jota is adding consistency to his game and at just 24, he is only going to get better. His competition are much older, towards 30.

So while they are continuing to shine, with Mo Salah in the form of his life – Jota is working in the wings, adding the final touches to his game.

It is coming to fruition. He is already on a par with Roberto Firmino and a more-than-adequate replacement when Salah or Mane are unavailable.

As time passes, he will surely – and eventually – overtake those ahead of him right now. By the age of 26, he could be the first name on the team sheet.
