Ferguson orders Rangers to offload one of Gerrard’s mainstays, says decision must be made by December

that Rangers should sell Connor Goldson in January – and make a decision on whether they will or not by December.

Goldson, 28, is out of contract at the end of the season. The Rangers centre-back has been instrumental to the club’s success over the last few years.

But this season, his form has dipped. The ex-Brighton defender is not seen as the stalwart in defence he was last season – and his future is in doubt.

This, even before Sunday’s semi-final defeat to Hibernian at Hampden. Goldson has been criticised for comments he made after full-time.

He said: “I don’t want to say this; we’ve lost a bit of hunger. We’re champions. Some think they don’t need to work hard,”

Reacting to both his comments, and discussing the defender’s future at Ibrox – Rangers legend Ferguson think he should be sold.

“Look how the fans celebrated the league, should that not give you more hunger to win trophies? I don’t think you wait until the middle of January.

“Mid-December, I’d have a cut-off point. You want guys to be committed. He was immense last season, off the boil. What he said took me aback a bit.

“They need to get answers from him if he wants to commit further down the line, or Rangers will need to cash in, in January,” Ferguson said.

Many would normally agree with Ferguson and his verdict on Goldson. With his contract up next summer, get some cash in for him in January.

But Rangers are lacking in options at centre-back. Filip Helander is now a long-term absentee with an injury, while Niko Katic is currently out on loan.

Calvin Bassey is a full-back that can fill in. Jack Simpson’s lack of game time suggests he is simply not good enough, and Leon Balogun is hit and miss.

Goldson is crucial, even despite his below-par form. Keeping him while Rangers lack options at the heart of their defence is absolutely pivotal.
