Federico Fernandez confirms he wants to extend Newcastle stay

Federico Fernandez has made it quite clear that he would like to extend his stay at Newcastle United and is expecting talks in the New Year about his future.

The 30-year-old is currently out of contract with the Magpies at the end of the season and is heading towards an exit.

He is a no-nonsense defender with great experience and he’s hit brilliant form in recent months.

The Argentine centre-back has managed to cement his spot in Steve Bruce’s defence and has been such a consistent performer.

He’s put his body on the line defensively and is a leader at the back, as well as popping up with goals in league victories over West Ham and also Southampton at the weekend.

Fernandez has explained he would be open to extending his contract beyond the summer if the possibility is there.

“Yes, it’s a great club,”

“Of course, we need to talk in January. We will see what the club think about it. We will sit at the table and see what the options are.

“I haven’t spoken yet. I focus on playing, on the team. It’s December, so we have time. I’m focused. When you play, play well, team plays well, everything is easier. We’ll see what’s going on in the next two months.”

TBR’s View:

Newcastle are stacked with quality defenders in their squad right now and Fernandez is arguably performing as well as any right now.

The South American colossus is an old school defender that has a real physical presence and he’s made it impossible for Bruce to drop him right now.

It would be an excellent decision to extend his contract in January, as he looks at the peak of his powers right now and he would be a quality signing for many rivals in the Premier League.
