Federico Chiesa has Liverpool fans all saying the same thing after his Plymouth Argyle performance

Federico Chiesa made just his third start for Liverpool in their FA Cup defeat to Plymouth Argyle on Sunday afternoon.

Usually, it would be labelled as a ‘shock defeat’, however, Arne Slot made so many changes to his Liverpool side that it was hardly recognisable from a Premier League game.

Joe Gomez was arguably the most experienced of Liverpool’s starters, but he quickly succumbed to an injury, and was replaced by 20-year-old Isaac Mabaya.

Slot took something of a gamble with his starting eleven and then doubled-down with his bench too, with only Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones as the senior options available to make a difference.

In fairness, Liverpool have played a lot of games since in recent months, and handing a chance to the likes of Chiesa made a lot of sense.

Federico Chiesa failed to take his chance in FA Cup defeat

That being said, Liverpool fans weren’t impressed by their summer signing from Juventus against Argyle, who was almost entirely nullified by his opposition full-back.

In fairness to Chiesa, he arguably has the hardest job in world football trying to start ahead of Mohamed Salah at right-wing for Liverpool, but he didn’t strengthen his case on this occasion.

Taking to X, one fan saw the danger for Liverpool in the first half and declared that both Chiesa and Kostas Tsimikas wouldn’t look out of place playing in green.

They wrote: “There’s a cupset on here, we look dreadful. Chiesa and [Kostas] Tsimikas wouldn’t look out of place playing at this level week in, week out.”

And as harsh as it may sound, another fan called for Chiesa to be let go in the summer after only six or so months in a Liverpool shirt.

They wrote: “Get Chiesa out of here in the summer, we need to cut our losses with him.”

That being said, some did leap to the defence of the Italian, saying he’s still getting used to life at Liverpool, even if he has now been at the club for some time.

“Chiesa improves with games, The more players understand his game and the balls he wants into him, the more he’ll shine. Though he’s a versatile player who loves being on the front foot.”

One fan also shared their thoughts that Chiesa was being played slightly out of position, suggesting that he shouldn’t actually be competing with Salah.

They wrote: “Chiesa is much better on the left to be fair.”

Arne Slot got it wrong against Plymouth Argyle

Of course, it would be over the top to conclude that Chiesa was at fault for Liverpool’s disappointing performance down at Plymouth.

Whilst he will have his justification, Slot simply named a side that was too rotated to get past a galvanised Plymouth side under their new manager.

Chiesa will improve and Liverpool will swiftly move on from their performance given all that is still left for them to achieve this season.

Virgil van Dijk was very positive after beating Tottenham to reach the final of the Carabao Cup, and Slot will ensure that his squad quickly reignite that feeling heading into some important ties to come.
