Fans react to Leeds star Kalvin Phillips’ display for England
A number of fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Kalvin Phillips’s performance in England’s win on Thursday – with many defending the Leeds United star.
💖Phillips was handed a start by Gareth Southgate for the World Cup qualifier with San Marino. Unsurprisingly, it proved to be a winning start to the campaign for the home side at Wembley.

ౠIt would have been a tough night for any England player to really stand out and impress. Some may argue that it was a tall order for anyone to catch the eye.
💝Nevertheless, Phillips seemed to come in for a lot of criticism after misplacing a couple of passes. And with that, many felt compelled to stick up for the 25-year-old.

🃏It was not a night for the Leeds man to shine. He took his place in front of the two centre-backs and seemed to be tasked with keeping things simple.
🍒The game was not played at anything like the pace he is used to with Leeds. And when he was in possession, he would have often looked up to see 11 San Marino players behind the ball.
💞There was one outstanding long-range pass out to Phil Foden late on when the Manchester City man was criminally afforded some space.
🌼And while it was not a night in which Phillips stole the show by any means, many fans felt that his performance was better than a lot of others gave him credit for.
‘Been quality’
ꦉWith that in mind, here is what some of the fans made of Phillips’s performance…

🐭kalvin phillips has been quality this second half picking some of these long balls out

♍Kalvin Philips has been brilliant this half. Breaking up play and allowing creative players to do what they do. Without Philips they would not be able to do that. Played some great pasees too. Grown into it brilliantly.

Kalvin has been an absolute boss tonight. Again.

﷽For all those slandering Kalvin Phillips just watch Leeds without him
— Charlie Miller-Wiles (@WilesMiller)
🍨No point biting to the anti Phillips Twitter brigade. He’s done exactly what he’s needed to do and distributed so well and hasn’t given the ball away once 2nd half. I’m happy if other fans don’t think he’s up to it – love him to be at for the rest of his career!

⭕Phillips will shine against teams that actually have possession . In this game Solid calm and kept it simple no more than he’s job required .

🌸Kalvin Phillips is getting absolutely battered on Twitter. He’s sat in defensive midfield against San Marino. What do people expect him to do?
🐓If you watch him week in, week out for Leeds then you’ll know he’s a great player. Never going to stand out in games like this.

📖Love watching Phillips play. Even in this England side, he’s so quietly confident and composed. Excellent in breaking up play.
