‘Failure’ – Sunderland fans point blame at Jack Ross after missing out on automatic promotion
Sunderland will be forced to compete for promotion via the play-offs after missing out on automatic promotion.
Jack Ross’ men lost 2-1 at Fleetwood Town on Wednesday night and that made a top two finish mathematically impossible.
Barnsley were promoted as both Sunderland and Portsmouth lost in their respective games in hand.
And some Sunderland fans have grown increasingly frustrated with manager Jack Ross after this result.

The Black Cats had the lead heading into the final 15 minutes of the match after Lee Cattermole put them ahead.
But goals from Paddy Madden and Ashley Eastham overturned that score and Fleetwood took all three points.
Some of Ross’ decision have been questioned this season. These include his persistence with playing George Honeyman and the fact that Sunderland have drawn so many games.
Sunderland now must navigate their way through the play-offs if they are to achieve an instant promotion back to the Championship.
Play-offs are always a lottery, though, and Sunderland have already lost to Portsmouth (a play-off rival) at Wembley this season.
After automatic promotion drifted out of reach, here are several tweets from Sunderland fans on Ross.
To put Jack Ross’ failure into perspective. Luton who were in L2 last season were able to overcome the loss of their manager during the season. Wheel Mick Harford out of a cupboard and still get automatic promotion

15 draws from winning positions this season. Yet we’ve got ‘supporters’ happy with Jack Ross because we’re not rock bottom. You’ve made a horrific mistake and you need to rectify that mistake in the summer. Look at Portsmouth coming from 2-0 down tonight to win
