Fabrizio Romano shares what Arsenal are now wanting to do in the market with a deal for Mikel Merino close

Arsenal are now just days away from full focus on their 2024/25 campaign with the summer transfer window set to close next week.

The work done by the north London side has been very selective in the market with Mikel Arteta having only brought in one signing so far.

Riccardo Calafiori was the man who Arsenal wanted and they got their man after weeks of negotiations with Bologna.

That looks set to be replicated with their next potential signing as Arsenal close in on a new midfielder.

It is believed Arsenal have agreed a deal with Real Sociedad for Mikel Merino who is now set to arrive in England to undergo his medical.

Now it looks like the midfielder is set to confirm his move to north London, attention could now be turned on to any late opportunities in the market.

Arsenal looking for late opportunities in the market

Having added a defender and the expectation of signing a new midfielder, Arsenal could now do with some reinforcement up front.

It’s been claimed Arsenal are now leading the race to sign Napoli’s Victor Osimhen with Chelsea also showing a keen interest in the striker.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now provided his expectation for what the Gunners could do over the final days of the window.

Speaking to , Romano has claimed there could look to bring in another player this summer after Merino.

“In terms of opportunities, I would keep, in Arsenal’s case, the door open. Still nothing imminent, still nothing closer, but Arsenal are considering opportunities on the market, so I would keep the door open for a last-minute chance,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s going to be something very big. I see rumours on players like Nico Williams. I don’t think Arsenal will do something like that, I think if they decide to do something, it’s going to be something for a back-up and opportunity in the final days.”

Arsenal could now be set to use Kai Havertz as their main striker

Ahead of the season opener against Wolves, there was the suggestion that Kai Havertz could be used in his more natural position as an attacking midfielder.

However, that did not prove to be the case with Havertz playing up top and finding the back of the net.

The same was the case against Aston Villa with Gabriel Jesus missing for Arsenal through an injury picked up during the week.

But if Arsenal are not looking to do anything major in the window – as Romano says – then perhaps Havertz is viewed as the player to lead the line following some impressive form up top.
