Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Youri Tielemans would love to join Arsenal from Leicester City in this summer’s transfer window.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for the Belgian midfielder for a few months now. Tielemans was reported to be Mikel Arteta’s priority target in central midfield, but a deal is still nowhere near close to completion.

The 25-year-old, branded as an ‘incredible’ player, has returned to Leicester for pre-season, and he is training with the Foxes’ squad ahead of the start of the new Premier League campaign, which is just under two weeks away now.

However, the Belgian would still love a move to the Emirates this summer, claims Romano.

Romano was asked about Arsenal’s interest in Tielemans last night, and the journalist claimed that it’s up to the Gunners now to decide if they really want him.

He said on the : “It is his priority. I would say it’s a clear choice because the player would love to move, he would love to join Arsenal, but it’s up to Arsenal to submit a proposal and go strong for him.

“He’s waiting for Arsenal since April, since May. This is when the contact started – it was the end of April, beginning of May. They are still there, they are discussing but still no official bid, just approaches and contacts. It’s up to them now to decide if they want to go for Tielemans as a priority after signing Zinchenko, or if they want to go for different positions.

“Because the player is out of contract next summer, Arsenal know it’s a big opportunity on the market having a player like Tielemans available like this.”

TBR View:

When the Tielemans links first emerged a few months ago, many Arsenal fans felt it was a no-brainer.

The Belgian is a fantastic player. He’s excellent on the ball, can play anywhere across central midfield, can score and create chances, and knows the Premier League really well, which is a bonus. Tielemans really would be a great signing for most clubs in the Premier League, but do the Gunners even need him anymore?

Arteta has brought in two new midfielders already this summer – Fabio Vieira from Porto and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City. Both players can play in Tielemans’ position, as can Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Mohamed Elneny.

Arsenal also have Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard who can drop back and play in a number eight role, which means Arteta has plenty of options in the middle of the park. That makes us think that Tielemans is no longer on the agenda, but football is a funny game, and things could change very quickly.
