Fabrizio Romano says West Ham now want to sign player Tottenham sold for £26m

The January transfer window is open and West Ham United have now identified a potential target.

Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Hammers are looking to sign Steven Bergwijn from Ajax.

The Dutch winger has been in good form over in the Netherlands over the past 18 months, scoring seven goals in 13 appearances so far this season.

Bergwijn could be just what the doctor ordered at West Ham as the Hammers look to find a left-sided foil to complement the threat posed by Jarrod Bowen down the right.

Bergwijn certainly knows where the back of the net is, and his pace makes him a fantastic weapon at this level.

Of course, Bergwijn has played Premier League football before with Tottenham before moving to Ajax for last summer.

Bergwijn’s time with Spurs was something of a mixed bag.

At times, he looked electric, he famously caused Manchester City all sorts of problems on numerous occasions, and he had spells of brilliant form at Spurs.

However, he found gametime hard to come by in north London as he was forced to compete with the likes of Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski for minutes.

That wouldn’t be such a problem at West Ham as the Hammers don’t necessarily have the same type of quality down that left flank, and with Said Benrahma being linked with a move away, a space could be about to open up in David Moyes’ squad.

Unfortunately, Romano did note that Bergwijn will only be able to come in if West Ham can find the budget to make a deal happen and after a hefty summer of spending, it’s unclear how much is left in the transfer kitty for Moyes and Tim Steidten this summer.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on as West Ham look to bolster their squad.
